PMHNPs usually get a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing before going on to earn a master’s or doctorate degree in psychiatric mental health nursing. To obtain recognized as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, PMHNPs must pass a national test. PMHNPs must receive a state license to practice in various states.
